Having the talk

Starting the digital birds and bees conversation is much like our first sexual experience.

It’s going to be awkward, there’s going to be a lot of fumbling, we’re going to be embarrassed, but we’re going to all feel pretty good once it gets done, knowing, hopefully, that we should get better at it with time. The idea is not to have a perfect conversation but rather to keep the conversation alive.

Preventing Targeted Violence by Adolescents & Adults with Kim Spence

The U.S. has witnessed an unprecedented rise in targeted violence, or planned attacks, involving schools, businesses, government institutions, and faith centers, leaving many to question how to prevent such tragedies. Research studying averted and perpetrated attacks has revealed key findings about attackers, including that many individuals had contact with the legal and mental health systems beforehand. This key finding highlights why clinicians, case managers, supervision officers, and judiciary officials need be aware of potential attack warning signs, as they are integral to preventing such attacks. This presentation, titled Preventing Targeted Violence by Adolescents & Adults, will review insights about attackers, the planning that precedes such violence, indicators suggesting an imminent attack, and ways to thwart such violence. Attendees will learn about the most common psychological issues exhibited by attackers as well as the frequently cited motivations for perpetrators.  With such information, attendees will be better equipped in preventing this nationwide problem.
